Troubleshooting
To start troubleshooting, you'll need to figure out exactly what's not working. There are many pieces to making your iPod work with Windows, and the problem could lie in any one of them: iPod, cable, motherboard, operating system, firewire card, MacOpener, and EphPod. How can you figure this out? Well, here's a very simple six-step process to determine which isn't working:
1. When you start up your iPod, does it show you the main menu? If not, then it's your iPod. Restore it on a Macintosh.
2. When you connect your iPod to your computer, does it get a drive letter? If not, then either (a) your firewire card isn't working correctly (Check for driver or Windows updates from your card manufacturer and Microsoft), (b) your firewire cable isn't working correctly (try another one), or (c) your computer's motherboard doesn't support the firewire card (bad news; you'll need a new one).
3. When you connect your iPod to your computer, does your computer crash? If so, then your firewire card, computer motherboard, or firewire cable is to blame. Try a new card, new motherboard, or new cable.
4. If you click on your iPod's drive letter in Windows Explorer, does it ask you if you want to format the disk? If so, then MacOpener is not working right. Make sure the trial hasn't run out! Try uninstalling, restarting, and installing again.
5. If you open up Windows Explorer and try to copy a file to your iPod's drive, does it work? If not, then MacOpener is at fault. Perhaps the trial period is over? Go to http://www.dataviz.com/EphPod/ to purchase your copy.
6. If all the above work, and EphPod isn't, then go to the EphPod FAQ and see if your problem is covered there. You can also see what Support Options are available to you.
